WHY GOOD FIRE?

Good fire, or prescribed fire, helps landowners create defensible space, reduce wildfire risk, and build long-term wildfire resilience. By safely removing excess fuels under controlled conditions, it restores forest health, improves wildlife habitat, supports native plants, and protects homes, property, and investments for future generations.

REDUCES HAZARDOUS FUELS

REDUCES HAZARDOUS FUELS

Good fire safely removes excess vegetation, lowers fuel loads, reduces fire intensity, and slows wildfire spread near homes and forests during extreme weather conditions.

CREATES DEFENSIBLE SPACE

CREATES DEFENSIBLE SPACE

Good fire strategically reduces fuels around structures, increases separation between vegetation and buildings, and improves access for firefighters during emergencies.

IMPROVES ECOSYSTEM HEALTH

IMPROVES ECOSYSTEM HEALTH

Good fire recycles nutrients, reduces overcrowding, stimulates native plant growth, improves wildlife habitat, and restores natural forest structure and resilience.

THE RETURN
OF GOOD FIRE

“Good fire” in California refers to the intentional use of low-intensity fire to improve forest and rangeland health. For thousands of years, Indigenous tribes used cultural burning to maintain open forests, enhance wildlife habitat, promote food and basketry plants, and reduce hazardous fuels. These frequent fires created resilient, fire-adapted landscapes.

In the early 1900s, agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service adopted aggressive suppression policies. Decades of extinguishing most fires led to dense forests and heavy fuel buildup, contributing to today’s extreme wildfire behavior.

California is now returning to prescribed and cultural fire. Organizations including CAL FIRE and practitioners trained under National Wildfire Coordinating Group standards support the safe reintroduction of beneficial fire, strengthening ecosystem health and community resilience.

PRESCRIBED FIRE
CONSULTING

We help landowners confidently plan, prepare, and implement good fire as a safe and effective land management tool. Our team works alongside property owners to assess fuels, identify values at risk, and define clear objectives—whether that’s creating defensible space, improving wildlife habitat, enhancing forage, or building long-term wildfire resilience.

We assist with burn plan development, permitting coordination, weather and prescription parameters, contingency planning, and crew organization. Using nationally recognized standards aligned with the National Wildfire Coordinating Group, we ensure operations meet professional safety and training benchmarks. We also help coordinate with local fire authorities, including CAL FIRE when required.

Beyond implementation, we support site preparation such as control line construction, fuel modification, equipment staging, and smoke planning. After the burn, we provide monitoring and adaptive management guidance. Our goal is to empower landowners with the knowledge, partnerships, and capacity to use good fire responsibly—protecting property while restoring healthy, resilient landscapes.
